WEEK 13: THE CHURCH AS SALT AND LIGHT
Day 86 (25 August 2026)
Theme: Preserving Righteousness in Society
Praying for the Church to recover her preserving influence within South African society. Asking God to raise believers who will resist moral and spiritual decay by consistently upholding truth, righteousness, justice, integrity, and godly values wherever they are positioned. Praying that the Church will not lose her distinctiveness through compromise, but will become a stabilising and preserving influence within families, communities, institutions, workplaces, and every sphere of society.
Action item 1: Restore the Church’s commitment to righteousness.
Matthew 5:13 (KJV) “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”
Isaiah 5:20 (KJV) “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
1 Peter 1:15–16 (KJV) “15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
- Father, in the mighty name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, restore within Your Church a deep and unwavering commitment to righteousness. Purify us from every form of compromise, double-mindedness, hypocrisy, and conformity to the values of a world that has drifted from Your truth. Lord, where we have tolerated what You have called us to confront, awaken us. Where we have compromised Your standards for acceptance, convenience, influence, or personal gain, bring us to repentance. Restore within Your people a holy reverence for Your Word and a desire to walk uprightly before You. Make Your Church holy, steadfast, and uncompromising in truth. Let righteousness become evident not only in what we preach, but in how we live, lead, work, speak, serve, and relate to others. May Your people once again become salt that has not lost its distinctiveness; preserving what is good, resisting what is evil, and carrying the righteous character of Christ into society.,
Action item 2: Raise Believers who preserve Truth and Integrity.
Proverbs 11:3 (KJV) “The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.”
Micah 6:8 (KJV) “He hath shewed thee, O man, what [is] good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
Psalm 15:1–2 (KJV) “LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? 2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.”
- Father, raise a people whose integrity cannot be purchased, manipulated, intimidated, or compromised. Establish truth in the hearts of Your people and make us trustworthy custodians of everything You have entrusted to us. Raise believers in every sphere who will refuse corruption, dishonesty, manipulation, exploitation, and unethical practices, even when compromise appears to offer advantage or reward. Give us the courage to do what is right when no one is watching. Let our private character agree with our public confession. May our word be trustworthy, our dealings honest, our stewardship faithful, and our treatment of others honourable. Raise Daniels in government, Josephs in business, educators of integrity, professionals of excellence, leaders of justice, and servants who fear God more than they fear people. Let the integrity of Your people become a preserving influence within South African society. Where truth is being eroded, let Your people stand firm. Where corruption is spreading, let Your people remain incorruptible. In Jesus Christ’s name we pray
Action item 3: Establish the preserving influence of the Church in every sphere.
Matthew 5:13–16 (KJV) “13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Jeremiah 29:7 (KJV) “And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.”
Proverbs 14:34 (KJV) “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin [is] a reproach to any people.”
- Father, in Jesus Christ’s name, we pray, establish Your Church as a preserving and stabilising influence wherever You have planted Your people. Let righteous believers bring truth where there is deception, justice where there is injustice, wisdom where there is confusion, compassion where there is suffering, integrity where there is corruption, and hope where there is despair. We pray for Your people in families, communities, government, education, business, healthcare, media, justice, the arts, and every sphere of society. May their presence make a righteous difference. Teach us not to withdraw from broken environments, but to carry the life of Christ into them. Where systems are decaying, raise people who will faithfully work toward restoration. Where communities are struggling, raise believers who will seek their welfare. Where institutions have lost their moral compass, establish righteous people who will help restore integrity and purpose. Let the Church’s influence extend beyond its gatherings into the places where people live, work, learn, govern, create, and serve. May South Africa experience the preserving influence of a Church that is faithful to Christ, distinct in character, courageous in righteousness, and actively present in society. Let our presence contribute to the flourishing of our communities and nation, until righteousness is established in the places where You have positioned us.
