WEEK 13: THE CHURCH AS SALT AND LIGHT
Day 87 (26 August 2026)
Theme: The Church as Light: Illuminating Truth in a Darkened Society
Praying for the Church to arise as the light of Christ in South Africa, bringing truth, wisdom, righteousness, hope, and godly perspective into places where darkness, deception, confusion, injustice, and despair have taken root. Praying that believers will not hide their light or withdraw from society, but will courageously and faithfully make Christ visible through their words, character, decisions, and good works
Action item 1: Pray for the light of truth to dispel deception
John 8:12 (KJV) Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Psalm 119:105 (KJV) “Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Ephesians 5:8–11 (KJV) “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now [are ye] light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit [is] in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove [them].
- Father, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, let the light of Your truth arise within Your Church. Deliver us from confusion, deception, compromise, and every falsehood that has distorted our understanding of what is good, righteous, and true. Give Your people a deep hunger for Your Word and the wisdom to rightly discern the times in which we live. Raise believers who will speak truth without arrogance, stand for righteousness without fear, and carry Your truth with grace and love. Let Your Word become the foundation of our thinking, our decisions, our leadership, and our engagement with society.Where deception has prevailed, let truth arise. Where confusion has governed, let wisdom arise. Where falsehood has been normalised, let the Church become a clear and faithful witness to the truth of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Action item 2: Pray for the Church to bring Light into places of darkness
Matthew 5:14–16 (KJV) “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Isaiah 60:1–3 (KJV) “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. 2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. 3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.”
Philippians 2:14–16 (KJV) “14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings: 15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; 16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.”
- Father, we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, cause Your Church to arise and shine in every place where You have planted us. Let believers carry the light of Christ into government offices, schools, businesses, families, communities, institutions, and every sphere of influence. Where there is corruption, raise people of integrity. Where there is injustice, raise people who will pursue justice. Where there is despair, raise people who carry hope. Where there is confusion, raise people who carry wisdom. Where there is hatred and division, raise people who demonstrate the reconciling love of Christ. Let the presence of righteous believers change the atmosphere of the places they occupy. May our good works become visible evidence of Your Kingdom, causing people to recognise Your goodness and glorify You.
Action item 3: Pray for the Church’s Witness to Point Society to Christ
2 Corinthians 5:20 (KJV) “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech [you] by us: we pray [you] in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.”
1 Peter 2:12 (KJV) “Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by [your] good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.”
Titus 2:7–8 (KJV) “7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine [shewing] uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.”
- Father make Your Church in South Africa a faithful and credible witness of Jesus Christ. Let our public and private lives agree. May our character support our testimony, and may our actions give credibility to the Gospel we proclaim.Teach us to represent Christ with humility, excellence, compassion, integrity, courage, and wisdom. Let our service to society be genuine and selfless, not driven by recognition or personal advancement. May those who encounter Your people encounter something of the character of Jesus. Let our communities see Christ through our compassion, our workplaces see Christ through our integrity, our institutions see Christ through our righteousness, and our nation see Christ through the faithful witness of His Church. Let our light shine; not so that the Church may be glorified, but so that our Father in heaven may be glorified. In the name of Jesus.
