WEEK 21: DISCERNING THE TIMES – THE ISSACCHAR MANDATE
Day 143 (21 October 2026)
Theme: Knowing What South Africa Ought To Do
True discernment does not end with recognising the times; it produces clarity concerning the required response. The sons of Issachar understood the times “to know what Israel ought to do.” In seasons of transition, nations can recognise that change is taking place yet still lack wisdom concerning how to respond. Today we pray that South Africa will move beyond awareness into divine direction. We ask God to give the Church, national leaders, institutions, communities, and citizens wisdom to distinguish between what is urgent and what is important, between good opportunities and God-ordained assignments, and between human reaction and Spirit-led action. May South Africa not merely understand her moment, but receive the wisdom, courage, and obedience to do what the moment requires according to the counsel of God.
Action item 1: Pray for Divine Wisdom to Know what must be Done.
1 Chronicles 12:32 “of the sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their command;”
James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
- Father, give South Africa wisdom for the decisions required in this season. Where there is uncertainty, bring clarity; where there are competing priorities, establish divine order; and where human understanding is insufficient, release wisdom from above. Teach the Church and the nation to seek Your counsel before acting. Deliver us from presumption, impulsiveness, and dependence upon human intelligence alone. Direct our paths so that our decisions align with Your purposes and position the nation correctly for what lies ahead. Lord, grant South Africa wisdom to know what ought to be done and grace to follow Your direction, in the name of Jesus we pray. Amen
Action item 2: Pray for Courage to Act upon what God Reveals
Joshua 1:7-8 “Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
James 1:22-25 “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”
Philippians 2:13 “for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”
- Father, deliver us from discernment without obedience. Give the Church courage to act upon what You reveal, even when obedience is costly, unpopular, or contrary to prevailing opinion. Strengthen leaders to make righteous decisions rather than politically convenient ones. Give citizens courage to take responsibility where action is required. Work within us both to desire and to accomplish what pleases You, so that revelation produces obedience and understanding produces decisive action. May South Africa possess not only ears to hear what God is saying, but courage to do what He requires, in the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
Action item 3: Pray for Strategic Alignment across the Nation.
Proverbs 11:14 “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”
Isaiah 30:21 “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.”
Psalm 32:8 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.”
- Father, bring strategic alignment to South Africa. Give wisdom to those entrusted with responsibility across government, the Church, business, education, justice, media, communities, and families. Raise trustworthy counsellors and remove voices that manipulate, deceive, or deliberately misdirect. Where institutions are moving without clear purpose, bring direction. Where efforts are fragmented, establish righteous cooperation. Where the nation stands at crossroads, cause Your instruction to become clear: “This is the way, walk in it.” Position the right people, wisdom, resources, and relationships around the assignments that must be accomplished in this season. Guide South Africa in the way she should go and align our actions with Your righteous purposes, we pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
