WEEK 22: WATCHMEN ON THE WALLS
Day 148 (26 October 2026)
Theme: The Calling and Responsibility of a Watchman
The watchman’s calling is a sacred responsibility to remain spiritually alert, hear the counsel of God, discern approaching dangers, and faithfully warn and intercede. As South Africa enters a season requiring heightened vigilance, we pray for the Church to understand that spiritual sight carries accountability. God is calling watchmen who will not merely observe the condition of the nation, but take their appointed positions upon its walls with courage, humility, discernment and unwavering commitment to His purposes.
Action item 1: Recognising and embracing the Watchman’s calling
Ezekiel 33:7 “’So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me.’”
Isaiah 62:6–7 “I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they shall never hold their peace day or night. You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent. 7 And give Him no rest till He establishes and till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.”
Habakkuk 2:1 “I will stand my watch And set myself on the rampart, and watch to see what He will say to me, And what I will answer when I am corrected.”
- Righteous Father, we pray in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, restore accountability to the watchman’s office within the Church of South Africa. Raise spiritual leaders and intercessors who will not remain silent in the face of injustice, corruption, deception and moral compromise. Give them courage to speak truth without arrogance, confront unrighteousness without hatred, and warn of danger without creating fear or division. Purify the motives of those who claim to speak on Your behalf, and establish humility, integrity and submission to Your Word. Deliver Your Church from the pursuit of influence without responsibility and authority without accountability. May our watchmen be faithful in private prayer, courageous in public witness and diligent in serving the communities entrusted to them. Establish a sustained culture of intercession and responsible action, so that the Church may faithfully fulfil its calling as salt and light in South Africa. Amen
Action item 2: Cultivating spiritual alertness and responsibility
Mark 13:33 “Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.”
1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
Colossians 4:2 “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;”
- Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, awaken spiritual alertness within Your Church. Where we have become distracted by the affairs of this world, restore our focus. Where we have grown weary, renew our strength. Where we have become careless with spiritual responsibility, restore reverence for Your Word. Sharpen our discernment without allowing suspicion to take root, and strengthen our vigilance without allowing fear to govern our responses. Teach us to test what we hear, examine what we perceive, and remain submitted to the truth of Scripture. Raise watchmen who will not confuse personal opinions with divine instruction, nor mistake emotional reactions for spiritual revelation. May our vigilance produce wisdom, our discernment produce obedience, and our prayers produce steadfast confidence in Your sovereignty over South Africa. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Action item 3: Restoring accountability and faithfulness to the watchman’s mandate
Ezekiel 3:17-19 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: 18 When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. 19 Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.”
Nehemiah 4:9 “Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, and because of them we set a watch against them day and night.”
Acts 20:28 “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”
- Heavenly Father, restore accountability to the watchman’s office within the Church of South Africa. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
