WEEK 22: WATCHMEN ON THE WALLS
Day 149 (27 October 2026)
Theme: Awakening the Sleeping Watchmen
A watchman cannot fulfil the responsibility of guarding the nation while spiritually asleep. Spiritual slumber manifests through complacency, distraction, prayerlessness and indifference to the condition of the people and the times. Having established the calling and responsibility of the watchman, we now pray for a divine awakening across the Church in South Africa. May the Holy Spirit stir believers from passivity into vigilance, restore the burden of intercession, and reposition spiritual leaders and watchmen to recognise the urgency of their assignment. This is a call to awaken, arise and take our appointed positions upon the walls.
Action item 1: Awakening the Church from spiritual slumber
Romans 13:11 “And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.”
Ephesians 5:14 “Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.”
Revelation 3:2 “Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God.”
- Heavenly Father, we come before You acknowledging that spiritual slumber has weakened the vigilance of Your Church in many places. Forgive us where comfort has replaced consecration, distraction has displaced devotion, and indifference has silenced our intercession. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, awaken the Church of Jesus Christ across South Africa. Stir spiritual leaders, intercessors, congregations and believers from complacency into renewed devotion and obedience. Restore our hunger for Your Word, sensitivity to Your voice and burden for the condition of our nation. Where prayer altars have grown cold, rekindle the fire of intercession. Where watchmen have abandoned their positions, call them back into faithful service. Let this awakening produce repentance, holiness, renewed spiritual discipline and responsible action. May Your Church arise as a people who recognise the urgency of the times and faithfully fulfil their assignment. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Action item 2: Breaking distraction and restoring spiritual alertness
Luke 21:34 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.”
Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
1 Thessalonians 5:6 “Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.”
- Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we ask You to restore spiritual alertness and disciplined watchfulness among Your people. Deliver us from every distraction that competes with our devotion to You and diminishes our responsibility as watchmen. Where the cares of this world have overwhelmed our spiritual priorities, restore divine order. Where the noise of public opinion, political contention, fear and misinformation has clouded our discernment, bring us back to the authority of Your Word. Teach us to remain sober-minded, prayerful and attentive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Strengthen our ability to distinguish between what demands our attention and what requires our intercession. Guard us against spiritual sensationalism, speculation and unnecessary alarm. Establish watchmen who are not driven by every headline or competing voice, but who remain anchored in truth, governed by wisdom and faithful in obedience. May our vigilance be sustained by intimacy with You rather than anxiety about the future. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen
Action item 3: Restoring the burden of intercession and repositioning the watchmen.
Isaiah 62:6-7 “I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; They shall never hold their peace day or night. You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent, 7 And give Him no rest till He establishes And till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.”
Ezekiel 22:30 “So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.”
Colossians 4:2 “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.”
- Righteous Father, restore the burden of intercession upon Your Church in South Africa. We ask that the Holy Spirit would awaken a generation of watchmen who will not be indifferent to the spiritual, moral and social condition of our nation. Raise faithful intercessors across provinces, municipalities, communities, churches and institutions who will stand in the gap with compassion, perseverance and biblical understanding. Reposition those who have grown weary, discouraged or distracted from their assignments. Strengthen those who have remained faithful upon the walls, often unseen and unrecognised. Unite believers across denominational, cultural and geographical boundaries in sustained prayer for righteousness, justice, peace and national restoration. May our intercession extend beyond words into obedience, service and responsible engagement with the needs of our communities. Establish a faithful watch that will not be silenced by adversity, weakened by discouragement or diverted by personal ambition. Let the Church arise and take its position, steadfast in prayer and unwavering in its commitment to Your purposes for South Africa. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
